Tripp Pittman is the Republican nominee for Senate District 32 in Baldwin County.
Interesting tidbits:
- In the original primary, there were about 15,431 ballots cast. In this primary runoff, there were 16,177.
- McKinney enjoyed the endorsements of Governor Riley and Mobile’s Press-Register.
- McKinney raised about 25% more money than Pittman, according to the Press-Register.
- McKinney enjoyed the support of the BCA and ALFA.
- McKinney already represents the entirety of Senate District 32 and the surrounding areas in the State Board of Education and recently got good press for it by voting for the double-dipping ban. (SD map / SBOE map)
- Pittman was not expected to win according to everyone I talked to and was considered the non-establishment candidate.
Just trying to say that I’m surprised.

It has funny how everyone who lived outside of Baldwin County is surprised that Pittman won.
Trip ran the best campaign and worked the hardest.
Few in Baldwin County were surprised by his victory…except for maybe Randy McKinney!

Baldwin County was just weary of the coastal developers owning it’s politicians.

Dan:
This was a David and Goliath story. Few times does the underdog win. Trip Pittman and his team deserved the most hard won victory.
Trip worked with Southern Insights a rising star in the political consulting world, Chris Brown, former Alabama Republican Party Executive Director, and Paul Glass. They are making news and winning campaigns.

It seems most of Montgomery is in shock by this election…especially in the Governor’s office

Democrats voted in the Republican primary, which is one reason why there were more votes in the runoff than in the primary. Obviously, they went with the candidate not endorsed by the “GOP establishment” in the area.

So what, campaigns are about winning. This proves Bob Riley has no coattails and is ignored when he tries to hand pick senators.

[…] I outlined this post when I was out last night and heard that Pittman won. Since then, I see that Dan at Daily Dixie has made many of the same points. […]

I think people tend to forget that while endorsements like Farm Bureau and Riley are important in statewide races they are not very important in local races

Wonder how the Governor feels about his endorsement this morning?

Christy — I agree that Bob Riley has no “coattails” with partisan Democrats in Baldwin County.

It takes more than just money to win elections and the candidate with the most money doesn’t always win. It sounds like Pittman paid more attention to the ground game and it paid off for him.

Exactly how many “partisan Democrats” are there in Baldwin County, and did 2,000 of them really go vote for Pittman yesterday? Are the Republicans in Baldwin County “partisan” and will they now support Pittman even though he was apparently handpicked by Joe Turnham and other environmental terrorists?

Gotta be those long-haired Pinot-Grigio-drinking arty freaks down in Fairhope.

Well, we’ll have to wait and see how big Joe Turnham’s coattails are in the general election matchup, won’t we?
Comment by Del
Are you saying McKinney’s supporters are going to put the Democrat in?

Can’t we all just get along…

May be some democrats believe in good government.

Maybe there is some advantage to finding candidates that appeal to reasonable people regardless of party affiliation.

Anon 17 — maybe, but all evidence is to the contrary (Siegelman, Zeb Little, Lowell Barron, Roger Bedford, Hank Sanders, Ken Guin, Bryant Melton, Laura Hall, Paul Hubbert…)
