I hope a bill is forthcoming
Representative Greg Canfield (R-Vestavia Hills) on his new website blog:
If we believe that private enterprise and the free market deliver goods and services more efficiently than government, then we must ask why the State of Alabama is engaged in the retail sale of alcohol to its citizens? And spending over $32 million each year to do it.
I rarely, almost never, buy any product that the ABC store sells. I don’t drink liquor and I almost never buy wine. So it’s really not that I have some sort of personal motivation in this. I think it’s supposed to be cheaper to buy from the state anyway.
Still, I’ve never understood this practice. Why does the state execute a monopoly over these products? I mean, what justification was given for the socialization of alcohol?
