Pelosi comes to Alabama
The Democrats in Alabama are getting more and more unafraid of the “liberal” tag. Nancy Pelosi spoke last night at the Jefferson-Jackson dinner in Birmingham. She didn’t seem to keep it light either.
U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a speech before Alabama Democrats tonight accused President Bush of leading the nation into war, into debt and politicizing the nation’s Justice Department.
The charge that federal lawyers under Bush have played politics with the law sent a charge through the crowd of about 500 in a Birmingham ballroom that featured former Gov. Don Siegelman. He was convicted in 2006 and sentenced to almost seven years in prison in 2007 on federal corruption charges, charges that Siegelman and his supporters have maintained were politically motivated.
Last year they were unafraid when they invited Bill Clinton, but it’s been a while since he was President and he’s generally liked even in Alabama.
But Nancy Pelosi? I’m quite surprised. Right or wrong, she’s seen as the left of the left. Some of the comments on al.com summed it up pretty succinctly.
Nancy needs to get her liberal butt out of Alabama as fast as she can. Don’t let the door hit you in the butt, you old bitty. […]
Get out Nancy, don’t ever come back and take your pal Siggy and his legislator pals with you. You’ll all be happy in San Francisco.
The Democratic Party in Alabama has a lot of history as being conservative. Has the transformation that started in 1964 over? Have all the Dixiecrats finally left? Or is this just a sign of the times — an unpopular Republican war and an unpopular Republican President — that is temporarily making Democrats comfortable associating with national liberals?
