The Information We Collect
The servers and software we use automatically attempt to log certain information provided by your computer each time you visit this site. They include (but are not necessarily limited to) your IP address, your referring location, and the type of web browser and operating system you use. This information is only collected if it is provided by your web browser. To learn how to limit the information sent by your browser, see your browser’s documentation. None of this information is particularly identifiable or harmful.
If you decide to leave a comment, you may decide to leave a name, e-mail address, and website. All of these fields are optional, and if you decline to leave a name you will be identified as “anonymous.” Your IP address, however, will again be recorded if able and will be associated with your comment. Your email and your IP address will be kept confidential (see below).
If you decide to register with Daily Dixie, you will be asked to provide a user name and an e-mail.
How Do We Use This Information
The non-identifiable information collected from your browser is used solely for usage activity reports if you do not leave any comments.
If you are commenting and leave a name, it will be displayed as the author of the comment. Your email will be held by me and the Wordpress software, but will never be published on any non-secure area of this website without your express permission. To see my specific policy on email addresses, scroll down. If you leave a website URL, it will be published as a hyperlink with your name. In other words, clicking on your name will send a viewer to your webpage. Any time you leave a comment, the IP address will also be logged and kept on a secure part of this software. I will never disclose or use this address or the information it provides except when required to do so by law, to cooperate with a government agency’s request, or to counteract the effects of spammers, hackers and campaign trolls. This includes preventive action and personal investigation.
Before you leave a comment, you may optionally check the box by the text, “Notify me of follow-up comments by email.” Checking this box will authorize this website to keep your e-mail address in a private database so that it may send an e-mail to it whenever an additional comment is made for that particular post. This database is not publicly available.
When registering with the website, your email will be used by the Wordpress software to send you a password which you can later change.
We will disclose information we maintain when required to do so by law, for example, in response to a court order or a subpoena. We also may disclose such information in response to a law enforcement agency’s request. This is the only time your information will be provided to a third party except as specified below. We do not sell e-mail addresses or other information under any circumstances.
In addition, your information may be used by us to publish non-personal information about usage to our users. For example, if two users leave a comment with the same name, we may inform users via comment to explain that the two comments are associated with different IP addresses (and thus likely two different people). Great care will be taken to ensure that personal information is not disclosed.
Privacy Options
By providing information on the website, you agree to our limited use of the information as described in this privacy policy. If you wish to decline providing your name (or nickname), your e-mail address, or your website, simply do not provide it. The website does not require this information to work correctly.
Cookies
Cookies are used with login features and commenting. You can limit cookies by adjusting the settings in your web browser. Cookies will remember your entered information if logging in to Wordpress or when you enter your information to enter a comment. This is purely a convenience, so that the visitor won’t need to re-type all their information again when they want to leave another comment.
The use of cookies does not represent a significant threat to your computer. If you would like to not receive cookies, refer to your browser’s documentation for information on how to change your security settings so that you can refuse some or all cookies.
Changing Your Information
If you wish to change your information for any reason, simply e-mail me. We further reserve the right to alter your information and the content of your posts or comments to remove obscenity or to correct/delete obvious typos and misleading information and solicitations (this is primarily for spammers).
If you are a registered user, you may edit the information and content of your own comments. Please feel free to do so.
Specific E-mail Policy
Because of the continuing problem with spam, we consider your e-mail address to be especially sacred. That was one of my primary reason for choosing the Wordpress software for this website. Wordpress never automatically displays your e-mail address.
Your e-mail address will never be published on this website unless (1) I have your express written permission or (2) it is obvious that your e-mail is not held to be private because you have published it on this website or on another publicly available website. Your e-mail address will never be provided to another party unless required to do so by law or to cooperate with a government agency’s investigation. Even then, they’d have to convince me.
Policy on Campaign Trolls, Hackers, Spammers, and other malicious users
Members of a campaign (including candidates) are welcome to leave comments at Daily Dixie, but deceptive comments are not welcome here. I highly suggest full disclosure if a campaign member is leaving a comment about a candidate that he/she is involved with. A member of a campaign may remain anonymous so long as he/she conducts himself/herself in an ethical manner. One example of unethical behavior would be to pass yourself off as a member of the public at large that is outraged at the opponent’s latest campaign promise.
If we determine that a campaign volunteer or staff member is deceiving the visitors to this site in an unethical manner, we may take any or all of the following action:
(a) Removal of the comment
(b) A warning to the commenter
(c) A warning to the candidate that the commenter represents
(d) Blocking IP addresses associated with the comments
(e) Exposure in a regular post of any relevant information on the commenter’s identity
(f) A press release to relevant news agencies regarding the incident and relevant information on the commenter’s identity
This is the only exception to this privacy policy. If a user uses this website for any malicious purpose, the personally identifiable information collected is no longer considered sacred. This includes any information associated with the user that was collected before or after any malicious conduct took place.
This privacy policy is subject to change without notice.

[…] Friday, August 11, 2006 Privacy Policy update Dan on 2006-08-11 @ 2:05 pm I normally don’t inform you of small updates regarding my privacy policy, but I just made a big change that I thought some of you should take note of. Before today, I haven’t had any policy regarding campaign members commenting on this site. It’s never been a serious problem like it was on Alabama Elections when that was still running. […]

[…] October 26, 2006 Real quick Dan on 2006-10-26 @ 9:52 pm I have little tolerance for campaign trolls who come to my website todeceive my visitors. I’ve made this clear in my privacy policy and elsewhere. If you’re a person who is coming to my site and leaving comments under multiple names in an effort to make people think a variety of people see things your way — stop. If you’re thinking about it — don’t. […]
